THIS AINT MEXICO! (Buddy Jewell, Al Sostrin)
“This is the first single off of the CD.  It’s a pretty controversial little song.  What we’re trying to say in the song is that we don’t mind anybody coming to America, but do it legally.  Everybody came here from somewhere else unless you’re an American Indian or Native American.  My family came here from England back in the 1600s.  It doesn’t matter where you come from, just do it legally, and come here to want to be an American.  I’m tired of people coming here and using our freedoms just like they did on September 11.  I think that it’s time that Americans take a stand.”

COUNTRY ENOUGH (Buddy Jewell)
“This is the title cut.  It’s a song I wrote by myself a few years ago.  I was really surprised when we went into the studio to cut it I kind of had this vision for it.  I had my band in the studio with me, and they just took off.  I love the guitar lick that Kevin Collier came up with on it.  It was something that really set it apart.  I thought it was a great song to start the CD off with.”

THE SOUTHERN SIDE OF HEAVEN (Buddy Jewell, J.B. Rudd, Vip Vipperman)
“I’d seen Hal Ketchum a few nights before and heard him singing ‘Just This Side of Heaven.’  I’m not really good at thinking up these titles, but God just kind of gives them to me.  I just thought about this title and thought the southern side of heaven…what would that be like?  So I thought well, if I take it back to the civil war and wrote it around the fictitious soldier that it might make for an interesting story.  The interesting part of this song is I decided to try to find a date back during the civil war that something significant happened.  I thought I wonder what happened on my birthday.  So I started looking back through history from 1860-1865.  I found that in 1865 on my birthday the confederate troops evacuated Richmond, Virginia, the capital, and actually they set it on fire.  I thought that was pretty significant so that’s where the opening line of the song comes from – April 2, 1865.”

THE WHEELS TURN SLOW (Buddy Jewell, Thom Shepherd, Steve Williams)
“That’s affectionately called ‘The Caterpillar Song.’  I walked into a writing session with Steve and Thom and they had the idea of ‘The Wheels Turn Slow.’  We got talking about what that would mean.  Sometimes it takes a little while for people to catch onto an idea.  I’m kind of slow myself (laughter).  We thought what are some different ways we can write this title.  That’s where we came up with that.  It’s actually written based on a couple of small towns like where I grew up Osceola, Arkansas.  That’s where the Piggly Wiggly came in and the Sonic and all that.  It’s something that people are really taking a liking to in concerts.  They hold up their caterpillar signs.  It’s really nice.”

NEED A LITTLE COUNTRY (Rodney Clawson, Buddy Jewell, Don Poythress)
“I think this is probably one of the most radio friendly songs on the record.  Rodney also co-wrote ‘Sweet Southern Comfort,’ so it was great to get to write with him.  Blake Wise who’s on Equity cut this song for his CD.  Hopefully he’ll have a big hit with it.  It’s a great little song.”

WHAT THIS COUNTRY’S COMIN’ TO (Buddy Jewell)
“This is a true story.  I was watching the TV and saw a guy burning the American flag.  It just makes me mad as hell to see somebody doing something like that to one of our national symbols.  If you don’t like the way we do it here then there’s plenty of other places to live.  Go.  The song is about how we’ve just let people run over us and how our rights have been taken away from us.”

THE ONES I LOVE THE MOST (Buddy Jewell)
“This was actually a true story back when Tené and I had only been married for a couple of months.  I was playing in this week-to-week band all over the country, and the phone rings at the hotel room literally 30 minutes before I leave to go to the show, and she’s crying her eyes out.  I was like what’s wrong?  She said I’m pregnant!  We had this plan of waiting three or four or five years before we have kids.  We weren’t married two months and she’s pregnant! (laughter)  It’s just about what a blessing it is at such a scary time for us.

Looking back on it I wouldn’t want it any other way.  We’re coming up on our 20th anniversary in December, and little Buddy, who the song was written about, just started college.”

THAT SUMMER GIRL (Buddy Jewell, Bob Regan)
“I came up with most of the titles of this project.  I can’t say that I had all the greatest ideas! (laughter)  I remember being in high school and falling in love the first time.  In the summertime there in Osceola, Arkansas, your friend might have a cousin come in from out of town to stay for a month or something like that.  I remember all of those little romances that would happen either to you or around you.  This song was kind of written from that standpoint and the summer romance that actually left a lasting impression on a guy.  I think we’ve all had that summer girl or that summer guy.”

SHE LOVES THIS TOWN (Buddy Jewell)
“This song is a view point of life from a single mom in a small town.  One of the great things about America and small towns is how everyone knows your business, but everybody kind of embraces you and they look after each other.  It’s a thing about community and a sense of belonging somewhere.  It was just written from that standpoint.  I know a lot of single moms out there who I really respect.  Being a father of three and having a wife like I do, I can’t imagine what it would be like to raise a child by yourself.  It really has to be tough.”

NO GREASE, NO GRAVY (Buddy Jewell, J.B. Rudd, Vip Vipperman)
“A lot of people up north may not get this song.  I don’t know if they make gravy up north.  It’s a southern thing!  It’s a cute little thing.  I told my guys when we went in to cut this to try to rip off ZZTop as much as we can.  It’s a tribute to their music as well as a little tongue and cheek thing – you better learn how to treat momma right.  If you don’t grease the pan, you’re not going to get any gravy.  You can’t have one without the other.”

HILLBILLY WATER (Buddy Jewell, Thom Shepherd, Steve Williams)
“There’s a guy named Larry Wayne Clark who I used to write a lot with and do a lot of demos for.  There’s a song on my second album, ‘Addicted To The Rain,’ that Larry Wayne and I wrote.  We were talking one day, and I sang this demo for him and another writer and there was a phrase in that song that said something about hillbilly water.  I realized they were talking about white lightening – moonshine.  I thought that would be a great title for a song.  I didn’t tell him that though! (laughter)  I was writing with Steve and Thom and I said you know, I’ve got this idea for a song…  I think we can make the hillbilly water mean moonshine, but maybe also this really cool little lake or whatever where kids go skinny dipping.  The preacher’s daughter thing kind of developed later on.  There’s a youth minister at my church, and that’s his three-year-old daughter’s favorite song.”

“Jim Weaver, who wrote ‘Abilene On Her Mind’ with me, he wrote this one with me as well.  It just has this George Strait kind of thing going on when we were writing it.  It’s actually become a fan favorite when I do my shows out on the road.”

WRITERS: AL SOSTRIN / BUDDY JEWELL

THERE’S A BIG DEBATE IN THIS COUNTRY TODAY
ABOUT THE BORDER SITUATION DOWN SOUTH
SOME SAY LET ‘EM IN, ‘CAUSE THEY WORK AND SPEND
OTHERS SAY WE OUGHTA KICK ‘EM ALL OUT
LET ME TELL YOU MY FRIEND, IF THEY’RE SNEAKIN’ IN,
PLAIN AND SIMPLE…. THEY’RE BREAKIN’ THE LAW
SOME CALL IT…IMMIGRATION; I SAY IT’S AN INVASION
AND IT’S TIME TO FINISH THAT WALL

CHORUS 1
‘CAUSE THIS AINT MEXICO….SORRY PARTNER, BUT, WE DON’T HABLO
WE LOVE MARGARITAS, AND THEM SIZZLIN’ FAJITAS
BUT WE STILL REMEMBER THE ALAMO
DON’T MAKE NO DIFFERENCE HOW YOU SPIN IT
YOU WANNA LIVE HERE, THERE’S A LINE, GET IN IT
YOU CAN CALL ME A CLOSED-MINDED, OLD-FASHIONED, FLAG-WAVIN’ REDNECK, GRINGO
BUT THIS AINT MEXICO

IF YOU’RE HERE FOR THE MONEY, FOR THE MILK AND THE HONEY….
FOR EVERYTHING AMERICA HAS…
IF YOU’RE HARD WORKIN’ PEOPLE, LIVIN’ HERE LEGAL
HEY, I AINT GOT NO PROBLEM WITH THAT
WE’RE ALL TAKIN’ A BEATIN’ FROM THE ONES WHO ARE CHEATIN’
THE SYSTEM AND BROTHER THEY WILL
KEEP ABUSIN’ OUR FREEDOM, SAYIN’ WE GOTTA FEED ‘EM
AND I’M TIRED OF FOOTIN’ THE BILL

CHORUS 2
‘CAUSE THIS AINT MEXICO….SORRY PARTNER, BUT, WE DON’T HABLO
WE LOVE YOUR SANDY BEACHES, AND JOHNNY RODRIGUEZ
BUT WE STILL REMEMBER THE ALAMO
YOU MIGHT NOT LIKE IT, BUT, HERE’S HOW I SEE IT
IT’S STILL OUR COUNTRY, SON, YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT
JUST KEEP ONE THING IN MIND, WHEN YOU STEP ‘CROSS THAT LINE MI AMIGO
THIS AINT MEXICO

BRIDGE:

THE PARTY’S OVER, DO I MAKE MYSELF CLEAR?
IT’S KINDA LIKE LAST CALL AT THE BAR
YOU DON’T HAVE TO GO HOME, BUT, YOU CAN’T STAY HERE…..
